The Ministry of Community Development and Social Services held a workshop on 13th January 2022 to orient Councillors on how the Social Cash Transfer programme was implemented. The meeting was held at the Civic Centre in the Council Chamber and was graced by the Minister of Community Development and Social Services Honourable Doreen Mwamba, MP, the Permanent Secretary, Ms. Beatrice Chilufya Darko and the Lusaka Mayor, Ms. Chilando Chitangala. It was attended by staff from the Ministry and the Lusaka City Council and all the 38 Councillors in Lusaka District.
At the meeting, the Minister emphasised the need to work together in order to alleviate poverty among the people of Lusaka as the city was one of the highly populated in Zambia. She said the Social Cash Transfer Programme was very important as it was designed to break the cycle of poverty and also the inter-generational transfer of poverty. Therefore, the Civic leaders needed to know how the programme was being administered and also own it so that they fully support it.
Ms. Mwamba said the SCT programme was targeting 1.1 million households in 2022 and this translated to 5.5 million people in Zambia. The orientation workshop was necessary because many Councillors did not know how the programme was being implemented and they could not work effectively with the officers and also the people they are leading in their wards.
