Community Development and Social Services Minister, Ms. Doreen Mwamba has arrived in New York to attend the 61st Session of the Commission for Social Development.
The session is taking place under the priority theme, “Creating full and productive employment and decent work for all as a way of overcoming inequalities to accelerate the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”
The Minister is also expected to participate in the panel discussion on item 3 of the Commission’s Programme of Work.
The Minister will further take part as a panelist in a Ministerial Forum on the priority theme, on 7th February 2023. The Ministerial Forum will be an opportunity for Member States to exchange national and regional practices and innovative approaches to ensure full and productive employment and decent work for all.
As such, Member States are expected to highlight policies needed to create more inclusive, equitable and adaptable labour markets.
Ms. Mwamba is also a keynote Speaker, at a side event co-hosted by Zambia and the European Union Delegation under the theme, “Effective Implementation of Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work for Inclusive Growth and Overcoming Inequalities” taking place on 7th February 2023.
The event will discuss global challenges and opportunities for effective implementation of worker’s rights as part of the decent work agenda.
On the margins of the Commission, the Minister is also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with minister for Social Affairs and Health of Finland, Ms Hanna Sarkkinen.
She will also participate in various sessions where she is expected to make intervention statements.
The Commission for Social Development is one of the functional Commission of the Economic and Social Council with the primary responsibility for the follow-up to and review of the implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action, adopted in 1995 during the World Summit for Social Development.
