North Western Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Tikki Mulofwa has bemoaned the high prevalence of child labour in the province.
Mr. Mulofwa observed that there were a number of children involved in various forms of child labour.
He said this when officials from Ministry of Community Development and Social Service’s Department of Child Development who are in the province to monitor the implementation of the Children´s Code Act paid a courtesy call on him.
“Children as young as 8 years old are seen doing hard work such as mining, farming and fishing when they are supposed to be in school,” Mr Mulofwa said.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary has since called for enforcement of the Act and concerted efforts from all stakeholders in addressing the issue.
“We all have a role to play in addressing this issue, starting with parents and guardians. No child is supposed to work, it is a violation of their rights. Children are supposed to be at school and working,” he said.
