Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Permanent Secretary, Ms. Angela Kawandami, says Zambia has learnt some vital lessons from Uganda’s poverty reduction milestone achieved through a robust policy design and implementation.
Ms. Kawandami said this during a bilateral meeting with Uganda’s Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Ms Betty Amongi on the side-lines of the 62nd Session of the Commission for Social Development at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
She congratulated Hon. Amongi on the milestone that Uganda has achieved of reducing poverty from 56 percent in 1996 to 20 percent currently, adding that Zambia is looking forward to further engaging with Uganda to learn vital lessons and understand the implementation mechanisms that facilitated the milestone achieved on poverty reduction.
And Hon. Amongi said the poverty reduction milestone had been achieved in her country through robust policy design and implementation.
She explained that there have been deliberate efforts to design programmes that extend to community level and have been implemented through cooperatives formed in the communities.
Ms Kawandami and Hon Amongi exchanged views on various programmes and activities aimed at improving the lives of persons with disabilities, youths, children, women and older persons.
The two sides also discussed programmes aimed at empowering communities through the promotion of cultural growth, skills development and labour productivity while promoting gender equity, labour administration, social protection and transformation of communities.
This is according to a statement issued by the First Secretary Press and Public Relations at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Zambia to the United Nations, Namatama Njekwa.
