Rural women are undoubtedly the backbone of rural societies and the Supporting Women`s Livelihood (SWL) programme being implemented by the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services has proved that empowering them is key to economic development.
The SWL programme provides vulnerable women between the ages of 19-64 in rural areas with grants of up to K3, 790, training in Life and Business skills, mentorship and helps them with setting up of Savings Groups to improve their livelihoods.
Through the programme, many rural women have ventured into various income generating activities such as trading, tailoring, crop and livestock farming, among others to sustain their livelihoods and feed their families.
