
Community Development and Social Services Minister Doreen Mwamba has officiated the Labour Day Commemoration in Kalulushi District with an assurance of improved conditions of service for all workers in Zambia.
Ms. Mwamba said Government is committed to promoting decent work for all by reforming employment and labour laws for improved production and productivity in all sectors of our economy.
She said this is evidenced by the improved the conditions of service for domestic workers, shop workers and general workers, among others.
This year´s Labour Day Commemoration is being held under the theme: “Building Resilience: Workers At The Heart Of Zambia’s Economic Recovery.”
“The desire of Government is for all workers in the country to meet their basic needs and sustain their families,” Ms. Mwamba said.
The Minister also assured that Government is working tirelessly to address challenges that workers in the country are facing resulting from the current economic and drought situation.
The Minister has further urged young people in Kalulushi to take advantage of grants under the Community Development Fund (CDF) and others to pursue skills training from trades training institutes and skills training centres including those owned by the Ministry of Community Development Social Services.
“In an effort to have a skilled labour force that responds to the needs of industry, Government has continued to engage skills training institutions as well as support young people to acquire life changing skills,” she said.
Meanwhile, Kalulushi District Commissioner Kelly Jibinga expressed concerns on the high rate of unemployment among youths in the district, which has resulted in an increase of crime.
“We are requesting Government to come in and help the youths in this district to have access to the TD6 dump site, as this will create job opportunities for the them,” Mr. Jibinga said.
And Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) Representative Nathan Zulu has called for more policies that alleviate the burden of poverty on ordinary citizens and workers in the wake of economic challenges.
