The Government says it remains determined to promote the welfare of older persons in the country while tapping into their wealth of skills, knowledge and experience.
Southern Province Permanent Secretary, Dr Namani Monze has assured that the Government is further prioritizing access to opportunities in technology, education, lifelong learning, and information for older persons, while also working to dismantle the barriers of exclusion and discrimination they may face.
The Permanent Secretary made these assurances earlier this week during the commemoration of the 2024 International Day of Older Persons, under the theme: “Aging with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support for Older Persons Worldwide”.
Dr. Monze further observed that senior citizens are a treasure to the nation and therefore calls for collective efforts to create an environment where their talents, wisdom, and cultural values are not only respected but actively utilized.
He reminded the nation to continue to treat senior citizens with the utmost respect and care in every sphere of life while urging all stakeholders to join hands in ensuring that the dignity and human rights of older persons are upheld, making their lives easier, healthier, and more productive.
The International Day of Older Persons, first declared by the United Nations General Assembly on 14th December 1990 is annually commemorated on 1 October to honour the wisdom, experience, and diverse roles that older persons play across society.
