The Children’s Code Act, No. 12 of 2022, has dominated the launch of Child Justice Week, emphasizing the urgent need for stakeholders to support its effective implementation to promote children’s justice in the country.
Justice Minister, Ms. Princess Kasune, alongside child Member of Parliament for the day, Suzzy Thompson, underscored the necessity for legal reforms aimed at advancing child justice.
The duo said this today in a speech they jointly read at the launch themed: “Zambia at 60, Advancing Child Justice and Safeguarding Children’s Rights in an Evolving World”.
The Minister alongside other stakeholders also advocated against using derogatory terms like “Junkies” when referring to children, saying children must be safeguarded against all forms of abuse.
And acting Chief Justice, Mr. Michael Musonda expressed concern over the slow progress in implementing the new law, stressing the need to invigorate its enforcement through stakeholder involvement and ownership.
Justice Musonda said there is a need to “breathe life into the Act”, for it to speak to the aspirations of creating a viable child justice system.
Representing the Minister of Community Development and Social Services Ms. Doreen Mwamba, Director for Social Welfare Mr. Nelson Nyangu assured that the Government is committed to reshaping the narrative surrounding child justice and enhancing the overall welfare of children.
He further called for the dismantling of barriers that impede children’s access to justice regardless of their economic, social or cultural status by creating a society where the rule of law is a shield that protects and not a sword that harms them.
UNICEF Country Representative Ms. Penelope Campbell further pledged support from Cooperating Partners to enhance efforts in promoting an effective legal system for children in Zambia.
