
Zambia and the United Kingdom have toasted 60 years of special partnership with a pledge to chart a course towards sustainable development in various socioeconomic sectors.
Speaking at the reception to mark 60 years of fruitful bilateral relations between Zambia and the United Kingdom, Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Ms. Doreen Mwamba underscored the importance of advancing economic cooperation between the two countries to foster growth in different areas of human development.
The Minister acknowledged UK’s support in different sectors of social protection following the declaration of drought as the national disaster and emergency by the President Hakainde Hichilema.
Ms. Mwamba further appreciated support towards the regular Social Cash Transfer and Drought Emergency Cash Transfer, describing it as crucial in sustaining the livelihoods of the poor and vulnerable during this challenging period.
“As the realities of climate change set in, Zambia has found a steadfast partner in the United Kingdom. From climate-smart agriculture to protecting our forests and landscapes, this collaboration is equipping Zambia to mitigate the impacts of climate change while securing the livelihoods of future generations”, Ms. Mwamba said.
She further observed that the United Kingdom’s support for Zambia’s debt restructuring and investments through the green growth compact are creating jobs and opportunities for our youth, while also positioning Zambia as a regional hub for investments in renewable energy and sustainable mining.
And Visiting UK Minister for Development at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, Ms. Anneliese Dodds has appreciated Zambia for making positive strides in various socioeconomic sectors.
Ms. Dodds said Zambia and the UK are poised for greater achievements as they embark on another 60 years of continued cooperation as evidenced by various development agreements entered into to advance the welfare of the poor and vulnerable.
