Sikongo District, one of the hardest-hit areas in Zambia by the 2023/2024 drought, has seen increased economic resilience among households benefiting from the Supporting Women’s Livelihoods (SWL) programme.
Acting District Community Development Officer Lishomwa Imasiku, praised the programme for enabling women in the district to better cope with the crisis.
Mr. Imasiku said through the SWL programme, women have been able to form savings groups, which have provided crucial financial support during these challenging times.
He added that the women have diversified their income sources by engaging in various income-generating activities such as trading, transportation and cattle farming among others, helping to mitigate the economic impacts of the drought.
“The SWL programme has been a lifeline for many women in Sikongo, empowering them to support their households even during the drought. Through savings groups and new income ventures, these women are proving that resilience and innovation can help overcome adversity,” Mr. Imasiku said.
