Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Permanent Secretary Ms. Angela Kawandami says traditional leaders are important partners in national development.

The Permanent Secretary was speaking when Chief Nalubamba of the Ila-speaking people of Namwala District in Southern Province made a presentation at Ministry Headquarters, with a call to partner in a long-term collaboration, aimed at fostering socio-economic development in his chiefdom.

The traditional leader is optimistic that the long term partnerships would address key social challenges such as poverty, education access and enhance social protection support for vulnerable groups.

Chief Nalubamba also explained that his chiefdom is looking to drive positive change through the Ikubi Lya Bana Munyati traditional ceremony and asked the Ministry to provide support that will advance aspects of creating a positive legacy.

Responding to the request, the Ministry PS welcomed the chief’s call, describing it as unique.

“This request is unique because you have recognized the role our ministry plays in communities. Chiefs are very important stakeholders in our programmes and we engage with traditional leaders in initiatives such as keeping girls in school, ending violence against children, combating early marriages and promoting food security and social cash transfers,” Ms Kawandami stated.

She added that the proposed partnership would serve as an opportunity to enhance community awareness and strengthen communication strategies.
