Zambia has commemorated 31st anniversary of the Rwandan genocide in which over 1 million people were killed, with a call for vigilance against genocide, discrimination and violence against humanity.
Speaking during the commemoration of the 1994 genocide, Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Ms Doreen Mwamba who was guest of honor, sympathized with Rwanda on the solemn occasion marking the anniversary of the genocide, with a plea to learn vital lessons on the dangers of division, propaganda and unchecked hatred.
She however noted with appreciation the path of reconciliation which Rwanda has chosen after the genocide and to rebuild its nation and mend the deep wounds left by the gruesome incident.
“Today, Rwanda stands as a remarkable example of resilience, unity and progress and has rebuilt itself socially and economically, proving that even in the face of darkest times, humanity can still rise again”, Ms Mwamba further said.
She said it is now imperative to educate future generations on the importance of peace, unity and human rights to avoid such tragedies in future.
And Rwanda High Commissioner to Zambia Mr Emmanuel Bugingo, acknowledged that Rwanda’s tragedy was a global failure with its recovery offering lessons on the power of grassroots reconciliation, the urgency of early intervention, and the need to reject complacency.
He said despite the progress made after the incident, shadows still linger with geocide ideologies persisting in some corners, fueled by denial and misinformation while survivors still grapple with trauma, and families await the dignified burial of loved ones.
He further appreciated Zambia’s continued contribution to peace and stability on the continent and hailed the bilateral relations between Rwanda and Zambia that have grown from strength to strength.
“The lessons of 1994 demand that we act now, not with empty words, but with unwavering resolve to protect civilians, silence hate, and hold perpetrators accountable because history will judge us not by our outrage, but by our action not to repeat the sins of the past”. Mr Bugingo said.
