Zambia joined the international community in commemorating the Day of the African Child (DAC) on June 16, 2025, with a commitment to addressing issues affecting children.
The commemoration, held in Ndola, Copperbelt Province, was graced by Provincial Minister Mr. Elisha Matambo.
Mr. Matambo highlighted the importance of creating an environment free from violence and other child rights violations, enabling children to survive, thrive, and reach their full potential.
He stated that government has made significant strides in realizing children’s rights, including the ratification of key human rights treaties, enactment of the Children’s Code Act No. 12 of 2022 and establishment of institutions such as the Victim Support Unit and Child Protection Unit under the Zambia Police Service.
Speaking at the same event, Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Assistant Director for Child Development, Mr. Gerald Tembo cautioned that government will not stand aside and watch children abuse drugs.
He advised children to say no to illicit activities, emphasizing that they are detrimental to their development.
“We are aware of children who have been used in trafficking drugs by some irresponsible individuals. Say no to being taken advantage of to do illicit things,” Mr. Tembo emphasized.
Mr. Tembo further urged children to take advantage of the great strides government has put in place to safeguard their welfare by being responsible, in order for society to recognize them as potential leaders.
Children’s representative Ricky Mulala called for the creation and implementation of policies that are child-centered, inclusive, and sustainable.
The commemoration serves as a reminder of the importance of collective action in promoting children’s rights and ensuring that every child has access to quality education, healthcare, and protection.
The Day of the African officially recognized in 1991 and commemorated on 16th June, every year is an important day which is commemorated in remembrance of African children, particularly those who were killed in Soweto, South Africa in 1976, following a protest they held aimed at fighting for their rights to quality education.
