Government has reiterated its commitment to delivering development that improves the well-being of all Zambians, particularly the vulnerable.
Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Eng. Joe Kalusa said this when he graced the official handover of newly constructed Mukamambo 2 Road Bridge Community Market in Mwachiyaba Village, in Kafue District.
The market has been constructed by the Ministry of Community Development and Social Service with support from the Korea Saemaul Undong Center, and the active participation of the people of Mwachiyaba Village at a cost of K468,739.48.
Engineer Kalusa is confident that the new market shelter will directly benefit the local economy and support small-scale traders, a move which will lead to economic transformation and sustained livelihood.
The project is part of the Saemaul Undong model, a community-driven initiative introduced to Zambia through cooperation with the Republic of Korea which emphasizes values of diligence, self-help, and cooperation, which the village has successfully adopted.
He added that the model complements key government programs such as the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and the Cash-for-Work initiative, which promote community-led development, job creation, income generation, and infrastructure improvement.
Ministry Chief Community Development Officer Mr. Aaron Phiri has expressed the Ministry’s commitment to scaling up similar successes in other parts of the country in a bid to enhance equitable and inclusive development for all.
He announced that the Ministry is currently implementing other projects under the same model which includes the construction of a community halls in Shakulya and Nansenga villages in Kafue District, which will serve as income generating ventures, as well as a 1×3 classroom block in Nanduba Village.
He commended the people of Mwachiyaba Village for their dedication and spirit of self-help throughout the project implementation.
And Saemaul Undong representative Prof. Chulmin Kim committed to continue assisting the poor and vulnerable communities in Zambia.
The Saemaul Undong team is currently in the country to monitor the implementation of the programmes being implemented in various villages in which the model is being implemented in the country.
