
A South Korean delegation from the Saemaul Undong movement, currently on a project monitoring visit in Zambia, has commended government’s efforts to uplift living standards in rural communities.
Led by Ms. Semin Hwang, the delegation paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Permanent Secretary Ms. Angela Kawandami.
The visit aimed to appreciate how the Saemaul Undong initiative is positively impacting sectors such as education, agriculture, sanitation, and community empowerment.
Following a successful monitoring tour of Saemaul Undong projects in Kafue and Chikankata, the delegation expressed satisfaction with the visible impact the on the communities.
Ms. Hwang noted that the projects have fostered mindset and attitude change among community members, cultivating hard work, resilience, and determination to improve their livelihoods.
In her remarks, Ms. Kawandami praised the strong collaboration between Korea and Zambia, which she said has fostered a spirit of unity, cooperation, and self-reliance in rural communities through the Saemaul Undong approach.
“These communities are now in their third year of implementing various Saemaul Undong projects, and we are pleased to report notable progress which includes the completion of a 1×3 health workers’ house, a market shelter, and improved water reticulation systems alongside several other projects that are nearing completion”, Ms Kawandami said.
She further applauded the ongoing capacity-building efforts, particularly the invitational training programmes that have benefited both government officials and community members.
She observed that these programmes have equipped participants with practical skills, leadership competencies, and the technical knowledge needed to adapt the Saemaul Undong philosophy to the Zambian context.
