Government has today handed over wheelchairs in Choma’s Mbabala area of Southern Province, as part of its continued effort to enhance mobility and promote inclusiveness for persons with disabilities across the country.
The wheelchairs, which will be distributed across various districts, form part of the 900 that Government recently secured and delivered to the Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities (ZAPD) for coordinated distribution to eligible beneficiaries following professional assessments.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Ms. Doreen Mwamba, commended the support of cooperating partners in advancing the welfare of persons with disabilities.
Ms. Mwamba, who is in the Province to monitor the implementation of social protection programmes, emphasized that persons with disabilities deserve meaningful inclusion in all socio-economic activities to enable them to contribute fully to Zambia’s development.
“It is critical that the device matches the individual’s specific needs to avoid causing further harm or discomfort. Let us uphold the dignity of every person with a disability by ensuring that support is not only available ,but appropriate, safe, and empowering”, she emphasized.
Meanwhile, ZAPD Director General, Mr. Frankson Musukwa, applauded Government’s continued commitment to the needs of persons with disabilities.
He noted that President Hakainde Hichilema’s passion for advancing their rights and welfare provides hope for a more inclusive and equitable future.
Wheelchair recipients also extended their gratitude to government and all stakeholders for their collective efforts, saying the gesture would empower them to participate more actively in the country’s socio-economic development.
