Kasabwa Savings Group in Masaiti District has successfully shared out over K274,000 in savings under the Girls’ Education and Women’s Empowerment and Livelihoods (GEWEL) Supporting Women’s Livelihoods (SWL) programme.
The share-out ceremony was witnessed by the British High Commissioner to Zambia, Rebecca Terzeon who commended the initiative for transforming the lives of women and uplifting communities.
She encouraged the women to continue serving as “role models” in shaping the future of their respective communities.
During the event, participants showcased success stories, including that of Ms. Prudence Chisala, who used her savings to purchase a motorbike which brings her K800 daily earns and helps to support her family in a more sustainable way.
“My life has changed so much with this support because am now able to provide for my family without worrying about the future,” Ms. Chisala testified.
She further highlighted that government, working with Cooperating Partners, has brought meaningful change and restored dignity to women across various communities.
According to her, empowerment has also contributed to the reduction of gender-based violence in many households, as women are now more productive and independent.
The British High Commissioner’s visit to Masaiti also included a tour of other key social protection interventions, among them the Social Cash Transfer, Supporting Women’s Livelihoods, and Cash for Work programmes, which continue to positively impact vulnerable communities.
