The Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS) has noted with serious concern the increase in fake and misleading messages being sent to Social Cash Transfer (SCT) beneficiaries.
These messages falsely claim that SCT payments have been made and are intended to steal personal information and money from unsuspecting beneficiaries.
The Ministry wishes to categorically state that all SCT payment announcements are made only through official Government channels and approved Payment Service Providers.
Beneficiaries are therefore cautioned that any message received from unknown or unofficial sources should be treated as a scam and reported immediately to the Ministry or the nearest District Social Welfare Office.
The Ministry strongly warns perpetrators to immediately desist from defrauding poor and vulnerable citizens of this much-needed social assistance, as such acts are criminal, unethical, and retrogressive.
To stay safe, beneficiaries are advised to observe the following precautions:
* Verify first: Confirm any payment message with your District Social Welfare Office, Community Welfare Assistance Committees (CWACs), or fellow beneficiaries before attempting to collect any funds.
* Protect your PIN: Never share your PIN with anyone, including agents. Your PIN is strictly private.
* Report fraud: The Report suspicious messages or phone numbers to the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) or the Zambia Police Service.
We would like to state that the Ministry is working closely with law enforcement agencies to identify and arrest individuals behind these scams.
We therefore urge all beneficiaries and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspected fraud to law enforcement agencies, as we collectively protect the integrity of the Social Cash Transfer Programme and safeguard the dignity of our most vulnerable citizens.
