The Ministry of Community Development and Social Services has commemorated International Literacy Day with a renewed commitment to advancing literacy across communities.
Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting literacy as a critical tool for empowering citizens, reducing poverty and driving sustainable national development.
Speaking during the commemoration of the 60th International Literacy Day in Kalumbila District, North-Western Province, under the theme “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity,” North-Western Province Permanent Secretary, Mr Grandson Wishikoti Katambi, said literacy goes beyond reading and writing, as it equips people with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions and improve their livelihoods.
Mr Katambi noted that literacy contributes to improved health outcomes, increased participation in the labour market and sustainable development, while enabling communities to understand and adopt practices that protect the environment and conserve natural resources.
He disclosed that Youth and Adult Literacy Education has expanded significantly, with the country now having 2,000 adult literacy centres and 43,165 learners, comprising 28,173 females and 14,992 males.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Permanent Secretary, Ms Beatrice Chilomo, has commended community development structures, adult literacy facilitators, community volunteers and other stakeholders for taking education and skills to people who may have missed opportunities for formal education.
In a speech read on her behalf by Director of Community Development, Mr Changano Ngoi, Ms Chilomo said literacy extends beyond the classroom and requires the collective responsibility of Government, communities, families, traditional leaders, civil society, the private sector and cooperating partners.
She said the contribution of various stakeholders demonstrates the importance of community-based approaches in ensuring that more people have access to literacy and skills that can empower them to improve their livelihoods and contribute to national development.
